   Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles established St. Augustine in 1565. It’s now considered the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European origin in the United States. St. Augustine was founded 42 years before the English colonized Jamestown and 55 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.
