The town was originally called Indian Rocks Beach South Shore, but it shortened its name in 1973. The community was once home to one of America's kitschiest attractions: Exotic Tiki Gardens. The jungle attraction opened to the public in 1964, featuring caged birds, trained monkeys and Polynesian-themed entertainment. The owners sold the property in the late 1980s, and a public park was erected on the site in 1990. Both the Gulf of Mexico and Boca Ciega Bay provide a variety of water-based activities ranging from boating and swimming to diving and snorkeling. Golf courses, hiking trails and bike paths are located in neighboring communities.
