   In the late 1800s, Clearwater was known as Clear Water Harbor. In 1895, "Clearwater" became one word, and in 1906, "Harbor" was dropped entirely. The newly named town became a booming tourist destination, and the city was incorporated in 1915. Tourism waned during the Depression, but a few residents moved to the area, attracted by the warm weather and scenic coastal location.
   In 1948, the Philadelphia Phillies came to town for spring training. Today, more than 113,000 fans watch the team play preseason games each year at Bright House Networks Field. The city also is a popular Spring Break destination, and Clearwater Beach is among the top-rated beaches in the nation for cleanliness, safety and scenery.
