Welcome to the Sunshine State!
Florida is the nation's fourth most populated state. Long a haven for retirees, it now also draws younger residents to its trendy resorts and beach towns.  The Seminole Indians were among the state's earliest inhabitants. In 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon became the first European to explore Florida during his quest to find the mythical Fountain of Youth. Spaniards continued to visit the area, and in 1565, St. Augustine became the oldest permanent European settlement in the continental United States.  Florida became a state in 1845, and tourists soon discovered its balmy, sunny weather. The
Panhandle's Emerald Coast and Miami's South Beach became popular tourist areas. Today, tourism remains an important industry. The state is home to several major theme parks, including Walt Disney World, Epcot Center, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Universal Studios Florida. And the state's pristine beaches still attract sun worshipers from around the world.

Florida is famed for its citrus groves, swamplands and untamed wildlife. Miami Beach features some of the nation's finest Art Deco  architecture, and
Key West boasts a boisterous nightlife amid a small-town setting. Key West is also the southernmost point in the continental United States.  The state is known for its ties to the space industry as home to the NASA Kennedy Space Center. Other points of interest include Daytona Beach, Cypress Gardens, Everglades National Park, the Hemingway House and Lake Okeechobee.  The state's name comes from a Spanish word meaning "feast of flowers." Its capital is Tallahassee, and major cities include MiamiJacksonville, Orlando, Tampa and St. Petersburg.  More than 16.7 million residents live in Florida, which spans 53,927 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $105,500.
