Delaware
Welcome to the First State!
Henry Hudson discovered Delaware in 1609, the same year he discovered the Hudson River. Delaware was controlled by several entities in its early years — from the Dutch and the Swedes to the British — and it eventually was governed by William Penn as part of the lower Three Counties. In 1787, Delaware was first to ratify the U.S. Constitution, making it the nation's first official state. Delaware is known for its chemical industry as well as manufactured goods, broiler chickens and food-canning. Attractions include Rehoboth Beach, the Fort Christina Monument, the Delaware Seashore, the Winterthur Museum and the Delaware Museum of Natural History.
The state's name comes from the Delaware River, which was named for Sir Thomas West, the Baron De La Warr. Its capital is Dover, and major cities include Wilmington, Newark, Milford and Seaford. More than 817,000 residents live in Delaware, which spans a mere 1,954 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $130,400.
