Real Estate & Homes in Connecticut - Connecticut, homes and communities
Connecticut
Welcome to the Constitution State!
Dutch navigator Adriaen Block first sailed on the Connecticut River in 1614. Nineteen years later, Dutch settlers built a small colony near present-day Hartford, but it was soon claimed by English Puritans from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. During the Revolutionary War, Connecticut was nicknamed "The Arsenal of the Nation" because it served as the Continental Army's major supplier. It became a state in 1788 and is now known as the insurance capital of the United States.
Connecticut is a popular resort area, especially for residents of neighboring New York. Attractions include the Yale University Art Gallery, the Peabody Museum of Natural History, Nook Farm, the Mystic Aquarium, the Mystic seaport and the P.T. Barnum Museum. The state's name comes from a Quinnehtukqut Indian word meaning “beside the long tidal river.” Its capital is Hartford, and major cities include Bridgeport, New Haven, Stamford and Waterbury. Nearly 3.5 million residents live in Connecticut, which spans 4,845 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $166,900.
