Welcome to the Centennial State!
Colorado got its nickname because it entered the union in 1876, 100 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The state has the nation's highest mean elevation and more mountains reaching 14,000 feet than any other state. There are more than 1,000 Rocky Mountain peaks in Colorado. Pikes Peak, which is located just outside Colorado Springs, was discovered by U.S. Army Lt. Zebulon M. Pike in 1806. Other mountains provide excellent skiing conditions in resort towns such as Vail, Aspen, Breckenridge and Telluride.
Besides the Rocky Mountains, Colorado offers a variety of natural wonders, including Mesa Verde National Park, the Great Sand Dunes National Monument, the Dinosaur National Monument and Garden of the Gods. Other attractions include historic Cripple Creek, the Gunnison National Monument, Invesco Field at Mile High, Coors Field and the Royal Gorge Bridge. The state's name is Spanish for "ruddy" or "red." Its capital is Denver, and major cities include Aurora, Lakewood, Fort Collins, Boulder and Pueblo. More than 4.5 million residents live in Colorado, which spans 103,718 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $166,600.
