Morro Bay Background

   Morro Bay was named for Morro Rock, a local landmark that rises 576 feet out of the Pacific. The rock is the largest in a chain of extinct volcano peaks — known as the Seven Sisters or the Nine Morros — that runs for 12 miles along the coast.
   Morro Rock was named by Portuguese navigator Juan Cabrillo in 1542. Legend says Cabrillo called the rock "El Moro" because it resembled the head of a turban-wearing Moor.
   Morro Bay incorporated in 1964, and the fishing industry remains at the heart of the city's culture. Morro Bay is also known as a pleasant tourist destination, offering scenic Pacific views and mild weather all year long.
