Cayucos BackgroundCayucos is a small beach community offering a moderate climate and scenic views of the Pacific. Cayucos, which is pronounced "ky-YOO-cuss," means "fishing canoe" or "kayak." The city was named for these vessels, which the Aleuts used to hunt sea otters in the Pacific Northwest and along the California coast. In 1867, Captain James Cass settled on 320 acres of the original Spanish land grant of Rancho Moro y Cayucos. Cass built a pier, store and warehouse, and the community soon became a small port city known as Cass' Landing. In 1875, William F. Babcock subdivided another section of the land grant, and the city of Cayucos was born. For more information on Cayucos, visit coastparadise.com.
