San Luis Obispo County is located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, in the heart of California's central coast. The region's history dates back to the Chumash Indians, the Spanish explorers and the Franciscan friars. San Luis Obispo means "Saint Louis the Bishop," and many towns in the county are named after Spanish patrons or rancheros.

And the county boasts two operational historic missions: San Miguel Archangel in San Miguel and Mission de Tolosa in San Luis Obispo.
