Real Estate & Homes in Coronado - California - Coronado, California homes and communites CoronadoCoronado BackgroundCoronado is a small island community located between the Pacific Ocean, Glorietta Bay and San Diego Bay. "The island or peninsula in the Port of San Diego," as it was named on an 1846 land grant, was soon simply known as Coronado Island. In 1885, a group of investors bought the island, hoping to create a resort community. The Coronado Beach Company set up shop, and the San Diego and Coronado Ferry Company made its first run to the mainland in 1886. Hotels and businesses soon followed, and tourists flocked to the island. Hotel del Coronado is the most-recognized structure on the island. Built in 1888, the Victorian-style hotel features towers, turrets and gingerbread trim. The Coronado Bay Bridge was built 1969 to connect the island to the mainland. The two-mile span is usually open only to autos, but it occasionally is closed for marathons and other foot races. For more information on Coronado, visit coastparadise.com.
