Yorba Linda

Yorba Linda History

Yorba Linda, California may be best known as the birthplace of Richard Nixon, the 36th president of the United States. The city's history, however, involves much more than the birth of one man: Native Americans, Spaniards, citrus groves, avocado trees, and the threat of annexation all played roles in Yorba Linda's development.  The first known inhabitants of Yorba Linda were the Juaneno Indians of the Acjachemem Nation. Juanenos lived throughout what it now known as Orange County, as well as in parts of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. The tribe remained there until the region came under the rule of the San Juan Capistrano Mission, but the cultural differences eventually proved to be devastating to the Native tribe.  In the latter half of the 18th century, the Spanish government directed the Gaspar de Portola Expedition to explore much of the land that would later become Orange County. The expedition crew included a man named Jose Antonio Yorba. Yorba's son Bernardo, born later in San Diego, would return to the region as a landowner. Bernardo obtained a land grant from the Mexican government and named his property Rancho Canon de Santa Ana.

Yorba's land would change hands a few times until it came under the ownership of the Janss Investment Company. Janss parcelled its land into one-acre lots, dubbed the region Yorba Linda, and began selling the property to individual settlers and investors. Those who came to Yorba Linda in those early years bought land for agriculture. Orange trees, lemon trees, and avocados thrived in Yorba Linda's fertile soil.  Between 1910 and 1920, Yorba Linda received electrical service, telephone service and railway transportation. A school, church and library were built and Yorba Linda Boulevard was paved. This was quick progress for the small California community, and the population went from 35 in 1911 to 350 in 1920.  Over the next 50 years, three neighboring cities either considered or attempted the annexation of Yorba Linda. Residents fought off the advances of Brea, Anaheim and Placentia, eventually incorporating Yorba Linda in 1967.

About Yorba Linda

Today's Yorba Linda is a quiet, family community that offers safe, beautiful neighborhoods and high quality schooling. The city has been recognized for having one of the lowest crime rates in the state.  The city's layout and landscaping allow residents to stay close to nature without being secluded from convenience. Greenbelts, lots of trees, large residential lots, and more than 100 miles of maintained equestrian trails make Yorba Linda a very different kind of community within Orange County. The semi-rural feel, enhanced by the lack of big shopping malls or crowded attractions, create a relaxed, enjoyable lifestyle that locals like to call "gracious living."  Housing options include many family homes and larger, more exclusive properties in the foothills. From some parts of the city, the views can be extraordinary: surrounding hills, mountains, and city lights create the backdrop. Even the ocean is visible from some spots. Prices for single-family homes range from $400,000 up to $2 million and more.

Activities

Yorba Linda is a city for those who enjoy being outdoors. Horseowners are particularly appreciative of the city's efforts to support their activities. Yorba Linda has three public equestrian facilities, plus 100 miles of riding trails. The community is also located just south of the Chino Hills State Park, where residents can explore more than 12,000 acres of trees and grassy hills.  A focal point of Yorba Linda is the Black Gold Golf Club, a gorgeous public course and facility that stretches out over almost 220 acres. Black Gold has all the essential golf facilities: lighted driving range, putting green, and state-of-the-art clubhouse.  Yorba Linda's Old Town Main Street is a great local shopping destination. The historic character of the buildings and uniqueness of the shops attract locals and visitors alike.  Two historic sites pay hommage to Yorba Linda's history: The Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Birthplace and the Susanna Bixby Bryant Ranch House. Exhibits and galleries detail Nixon's political career and international peacemaking efforts. The grounds and, in particular, the library gardens are gorgeous, reflecting Pat Nixon's taste in roses.  The Susanna Bixby Bryant Ranch House and Museum is dedicated to furthering the public's knowledge of and appreciation for Yorba Linda's history. Ranch house rooms are themed to present different eras of the community's development. Both the Nixon Library and the Bryant Ranch House are used to host special community events throughout the year.  Yorba Linda is also within driving distance to beaches, San Bernardino Mountains and California deserts. San Diego and Ventura, each about 100 miles away, are close enough for day trips.

Schools

School-age students of Yorba Linda attend schools within the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District. With 30 schools throughout Placentia and Yorba Linda, the district serves more than 26,000 students with almost 1,200 classroom teachers. There are 22 elementary schools, four middle schools, four high schools, and one alternative high school.  Several of Placentia/Yorba Linda schools are recipients of the California Distinguished Schools Award. The award is partially based on test scores; students in the Placentia-Yorba Linda district on average score very well on standardized tests.  College students have several options within driving distance. These include community colleges such as Santiago Canyon College and Fullerton College, and private universities like Chapman and Bethesda Christian University. All of these institutions are relatively small, with total enrollments of 5,000 or less. The largest local college is Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, known as Mt. Sac, which is about 15 miles away.
