Los Alamitos

Los Alamitos History

Los Alamitos, meaning Little Cottonwoods, was named by Spanish settlers over 200 years ago. The name originally referred to a ranch of over 85,000 acres in size that stretched from present-day Los Alamitos to present-day Long Beach. This ranch was originally part of a much larger piece of property that was supposedly being held in trust for the local Native American tribes by a Spanish governor. The governor, however, granted the land to two Spanish sergeants named Nieto and Dominguez; the land grant included most of the property between the Santa Ana River and the San Gabriel River. When Sergeant Nieto died, his property was divided into five smaller ranches and passed on to his children. One of these ranches was Los Alamitos.

The ranch would change hands several times until about 25,000 acres of it came under the ownership of two sheep ranchers, Bixby and Hellman, in 1881. Up until that point, the land had been used primarily for cattle ranching. The new owners allotted 5,000 acres for the development of a township.  In 1896, William Clark, a former Montana mayor, purchased about 8,100 acres of the land to raise sugar beets. The Los Alamitos Sugar Company was established, along with a factory, streets, recreational facilities for employees, and company homes. The sugar beet business prospered until insects destroyed the crops in 1921.

The town, however, continued to survive. Twenty years later, the U.S. Navy decided to move its aircraft training field from Terminal Island to Los Alamitos. The establishment of the 1,300-acre facility would breath new life into Los Alamitos by attracting new residents and hopeful entrepreneurs. After World War II, the base was used by the Navy as a reserve training facility. It would later be licensed to the California National Guard, which continues to use the airfield as a reserve training center. The facility is now known as the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base.  Los Alamitos was incorporated as a city in 1960.

About Los Alamitos

Today, Los Alamitos, known locally as simply "Los Al," is a modern, suburban city with a relaxed lifestyle. Most of the city land has been developed, leaving no room for heavy manufacturing or industrial plants. Instead, Los Alamitos' local economy is driven by professional enterprises operating in strategically located business parks and retailers in the community's main shopping area. The remainder of Los Alamitos is comprised of residential neighborhoods, schools, and city parks.

Many families are attracted to Los Alamitos for its high quality schools and comfortable residential neighborhoods. the community of Rossmoor, a census-designated place southwest of central Los Alamitos, is particularly well regarded for its large homes and strong property values.  Many of the city's homes were built between 1960 and 1990. Residents are generally proud of their community and its lifestyle, however, and even the older homes are usually very well maintained. Most of the homes in the city have three or more bedrooms.  The Joint Forces Training Base takes up a large portion of the southeast corner of the city. There are residential neighborhoods around the facility, but most are separated from the base by two golf courses that lie on the south and east sides of the facility.

Activities

Los Alamitos' best known attraction is the Los Alamitos Race Course, featuring quarter horse, Arabian, thoroughbred, paint and appaloosa horse racing. The track hosts racing four nights a week, almost year-round. Visitors can also check out two restaurants on site: The Vessels Club and Turf Terrace Dining Room. The Vessels Club is a classy establishment situated at the top of the grandstands, designed for watching the races in style. In 1999, The Vessels Club was the recipient of the Southern California Restaurant Writers' Sterling Silver Award.   The main retail area of Los Alamitos is located on Seal Beach Boulevard, north of Interstate 405 and west of the Armed Forces Reserve Center. Two large, outdoor shopping centers feature many dining options, department stores, grocery stores, several smaller retailers, and the local bowling alley.

Los Alamitos manages nine public park sites, which total about 28 acres of space. Available facilities include soccer fields, baseball fields, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, basketball courts, playgrounds, barbecues, picnic shelters, and lighted fields. The city also runs many classes and special activities for kids, teens, adults, and seniors. Swimming is also available at the USA Water Polo National Training Center on the Joint Forces Training Base.

The northern Orange County location of Los Alamitos is convenient to many attractions throughout Southern California. Interstate 405 provides access to the north and south, while Interstate 605 leads to the inland areas. Long Beach, Seal Beach, and Sunset Beach are just minutes from Los Alamitos, as are large, indoor malls in Westminster and Cerritos. The big name attractions of Disneyland, California Adventure, and Knott's Berry Farm are less than 15 miles away by car.

Schools

The public schooling in Los Alamitos is regarded highly, and families are willing to pay a premium for their homes to get their children into the district. Los Alamitos Unified manages 10 campuses and serves over 9,000 students. There are six elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. Los Alamitos High has a great reputation for both sports and academics.  Higher learning institutions are located in neighboring cities, easily close enough for a daily commute. Cypress College, Long Beach City College, and Golden West College (in Huntington Beach) provide two-year curricula within a 10-mile radius. California State University, Long Beach, is less than five miles from Los Alamitos.
