Real Estate & Homes in Los Alamitos - California - Los Alamitos, California homes and communites
Los AlamitosLos Alamitos History The ranch would change hands several times until about 25,000 acres of it came under the ownership of two sheep ranchers, Bixby and Hellman, in 1881. Up until that point, the land had been used primarily for cattle ranching. The new owners allotted 5,000 acres for the development of a township. In 1896, William Clark, a former Montana mayor, purchased about 8,100 acres of the land to raise sugar beets. The Los Alamitos Sugar Company was established, along with a factory, streets, recreational facilities for employees, and company homes. The sugar beet business prospered until insects destroyed the crops in 1921. The town, however, continued to survive. Twenty years later, the U.S. Navy decided to move its aircraft training field from Terminal Island to Los Alamitos. The establishment of the 1,300-acre facility would breath new life into Los Alamitos by attracting new residents and hopeful entrepreneurs. After World War II, the base was used by the Navy as a reserve training facility. It would later be licensed to the California National Guard, which continues to use the airfield as a reserve training center. The facility is now known as the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base. Los Alamitos was incorporated as a city in 1960.
