La Palma

La Palma History

In 1955, the city now known as La Palma was incorporated under the name Dairyland. The area had been entirely agricultural for 100 years, and the residents were strongly against residential development and urbanization of their community. The farmers, chicken ranchers and cattle ranchers of Dairyland originally structured city-zoning laws to prohibit all housing developments.

The community remained entirely agricultural for about 10 years. During that time, growth of neighboring Orange County communities prompted an increase in the value of the land, and Dairyland residents were eventually swayed to accept some profit taking on their properties. In 1964, the name of the city was changed to La Palma, and a city plan was created, defining specific residential, commercial and industrial areas.  Early development projects were the La Palma Civic Center and Central Park. Since then, the bulk of the development has been the residential housing tracts that have overtaken all of La Palma's early ranches and farms. In the 1980s, the Centerpointe complex added dining, hotel, commercial, and light industrial space to the city.

About La Palma

At just less than 1.8 square miles, La Palma is the smallest of Orange County's cities in terms of land size. The majority of the community is residential housing tracts, broken up by small retail centers and the larger commercial area known as Centerpointe. Many of the homes in La Palma were built in the 1970s and 1980s. The region today is undergoing a great deal of renovation and remodeling. As with many of Southern California's neighborhoods in recent years, this has prompted strong growth in La Palma property values.

Activities

La Palma's primary feature is its small-town atmosphere. The city is, by design, without big-name attractions or crowded entertainment venues. Residents appreciate the quiet, suburban lifestyle that allows them to spend their free time at their own pace. Despite the city's location in a well-populated section of inland Orange County, La Palma has very low crime rates as well.

The main gathering places are Central Park, La Palma Community Center and Centerpointe. Central Park and the community center host many city-run events, activities, team sports, and special interest classes and lessons. The city is known to host community events year-round, giving residents many chances to get together and enjoy their local culture. These events include Halloween carnivals, holiday tree lighting ceremonies, the Fourth of July Run for Fun, and Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.  Centerpointe is the main commercial area of the city. The area features restaurants, banks, hotels, and meticulously landscaped commercial buildings.

Schools

Since La Palma does not have its own school district, the city is served by three districts based in neighboring communities: Anaheim Union High School District, Centralia Elementary School District, and Cypress Elementary School District. There are five public school campuses in La Palma. The Centralia district operates Los Coyotes Elementary and Miller Elementary; the Cypress district manages Luther Elementary School; and Walker Junior High and John F. Kennedy High School are within the Anaheim high school district.  Several institutions in neighboring communities provide post-high school education within 10 miles of La Palma. Community colleges are located in Cypress, Cerritos, Long Beach, and Fullerton. Many of these students finish their four-year degrees at the California State University, Long Beach campus. Private university options nearby include Biola University and Bethesda Christian University.
