Real Estate & Homes in Fullerton - Fullerton Information

Fullerton

Fullerton History

Fullerton's known background is loosely held together by evidence of prehistoric animals, Spanish soldiers, sheep ranchers, the railroad, and the raw Old West. The oldest indicators of Fullerton's background are the bones of mammoths and saber-toothed tigers found in one of Fullerton's regional parks. Many eras later, Fullerton was the home of Gabrielinos Native Americans and, even later, Spanish soldiers seeking to convert the natives to Christianity. Once California became part of the United States, Fullerton and the surrounding regions were choice destinations for homesteaders.

When rumors began to spread about the California Central Railroad's plans to build a line through the region, two enterprising men decided to get in on the opportunity. These two men were George and Edward Amerige. The Ameriges found a town site that looked promising and made arrangements for its purchase. They then met with a railroad executive named George Fullerton and negotiated to have the new rail line run through the town. In 1887, all negotiations finished successfully and the Ameriges named their new town site Fullerton. Fullerton was at first a typical, somewhat violent Old West town. Over time, agriculture and, later, oil production encouraged a more stable community. Oranges and avocados were the primary crops. When oil was discovered at the northern end of the community, oil production became the economic focus.  The city was incorporated in 1904. Fullerton Municipal Airport, still operating today, was built in 1927. The airport is the county's oldest general aviation field that continues to operate from its original location.

Activities

The atmosphere of Fullerton today reflects the city's rich past. As a whole, the community strongly supports endeavors focusing on history, science, education, and art. Performing and fine arts are very popular, as demonstrated by well-attended events year-round at the Fullerton Civic Light Opera and the Fullerton Museum Center. At the Muckenthaler Cultural Center, visitors can view and purchase the work of local artists. Additional arts and cultural events are held at the California State University, Fullerton campus. The historic downtown area is also a popular way to spend an afternoon. Downtown features over 70 historic buildings, filled with boutique shops, art galleries, unique restaurants and cafés. The atmosphere has been enhanced in recent years by revitalization programs and the establishment of nightlife venues and hip, urban apartments.  Fullerton has two weekly farmers markets where visitors can purchase fresh produce and unique arts and crafts.

The city has also experienced a lot of new retail development over the last 10 years, providing residents with updated, open-air shopping centers throughout the community. Although Fullerton has a strong retail presence, there is still quite a bit of open, undeveloped space to enjoy. City parks and the Fullerton Arboretum are popular natural retreats used for picnicking or just exploring. The Fullerton Arboretum is a 26-acre site on the University campus that features a children's garden, a Victorian cottage, and rare subtropical fruit groves. The city's busiest parks are Craig Regional Park and Independence Park. Craig Regional Park offers sports facilities of all kinds: baseball diamonds, tennis, racquetball and volleyball courts, and a fishing lake. In the summer months, residents flock to Independence Park to swim in the pool or play volleyball and racquetball.
