Dana Point Background In his novel "Two Years Before the Mast," Richard Henry Dana named the region near present-day Dana Point "the only romantic spot on the coast." You can decide for yourself by visiting the unique hills and bluffs that make up the city's coastline. In 1884, the U.S. Coast Survey named the Headlands area Dana Point after the author. Dana Point eventually came to include the surrounding communities of Capistrano Beach and Monarch Beach. The original town featured streetlights that modeled sailors' kerosene lanterns. The colorful fixtures gave name to the city's streets, which you can see today on Street of the Golden Lantern and Street of the Blue Lantern.
