Real Estate & Homes in Anaheim - Anaheim Information
Anahiem
Anaheim History Anaheim was established in the 1850s by a group of German immigrants and winemakers. The name was determined by combining 'Ana,' referring to the nearby Santa Ana River and 'heim,' a German word meaning 'home.' The 1,165-acre community quickly developed many vineyards and more than 40 wineries, becoming California's largest producer of wine at that time. Anaheim's wine boom was unfortunately cut short about 30 years later, when disease destroyed the crops. When residents returned to growing, they chose citrus crops instead. Oranges were the main product of the city until 1955. During this time period, Chinese laborers arrived to tend to the orange trees. These workers would eventually establish their own sub-community, setting up as trade merchants and service providers in the area that is now downtown Anaheim. The city's dependence on agriculture ended with the 1955 opening of Disneyland, today the premier attraction of Anaheim. Tourism became the focus and the city prospered. Anaheim Stadium opened in 1964. Anaheim was incorporated in 1876, with a population of 881. In 1920, the population was 5,526. Today, Anaheim has about 330,000 residents, making it the largest city in Orange County.
Activities Anaheim has a world-renowned collection of big name tourist destinations. The best known is Disneyland, "The Happiest Place on Earth." Spanning 85 acres, Disneyland offer themed lands, rides, live entertainment, eclectic dining and shopping. Visitors can interact with Disney characters, watch a parade, experience a thrill ride, or enjoy a mint julep from New Orleans Square. The success of Disneyland has brought additional Disney attractions to Anaheim: Disney's California Adventure, a smaller theme park; Downtown Disney District, a main street area with fine dining, sports bars, and nightclubs; and the Disneyland Hotels. Professional sports also have a strong presence in Anaheim. The city is home to the Angels and the Ducks, representing baseball and hockey, respectively. Fans can cheer on the Angels at Angel Stadium and the Ducks at the Arrowhead Pond. Live entertainment venues include The Grove of Anaheim and the House of Blues. The Grove also hosts the annual Taste of Anaheim, a food and wine festival organized by the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce.
Locals tend to avoid the bustle of the city's tourist destinations, particularly those who live in the more suburban Anaheim Hills area. These neighborhoods, located in the northeast section of the city, are built on green, rolling hills - seemingly far removed from the flat, urban area where the Disney Resorts are located. Anaheim's parks and golf courses are the everyday recreational venues. The city has 11 community parks, 21 neighborhood parks, and seven special use parks, including the Oak Canyon Nature Center. Oak Canyon features hiking trails, exhibits, and special programs for children. Golfers will appreciate the city's two public courses, Dad Miller and Anaheim Hills Golf Course.
Schools Several school districts provide public schooling in Anaheim. The largest are Anaheim Elementary School District and Anaheim Union High School District. Anaheim Elementary operates 23 schools, serving over 22,000 students in kindergarten through the sixth grade. Anaheim Union High has an enrollment of over 31,000 across 21 campuses. Smaller districts include Magnolia Elementary School District and Savanna Elementary School District. The city is also home to several universities, colleges, and technical schools. These include Bethesda Christian University, South Coast College, and ITT Technical Institute.
