Santa Monica Background The Pier and the Promenade. Mention these two words, and most Californians will think of one city: Santa Monica. The Santa Monica Pier is one of the nation's most famous landmarks. You can take a spin on the popular carousel or venture onto one of the rides at Pacific Park, the pier's amusement park. The pier also offers a variety of shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. The Third Street Promenade is an outdoor shopping area filled with restaurants, shops, galleries and theaters. The Promenade also hosts two weekly farmers' markets and is close to hotels, parks and beaches. Santa Monica was also instrumental during the early days of aviation. In 1919, the city leased 15 acres of land to be used for an airport. Clover Field was built on the site, and Donald Douglas built an aircraft factory in 1921.
