Real Estate & Homes in Cerritos - Cerritos Information

Cerritos

Cerritos History

After the conclusion of the Mexican-American War, American ranchers and farmers began buying up land in the region now known as Cerritos, California. Just a few Spanish officers and their families formerly owned the land. Development in the area was limited, and the expanse of land available attracted cattle and chicken ranchers in particular.   The region's early dependence on the dairy industry led to the community's first official name: Dairy Valley. When Dairy Valley was incorporated in 1956, there were about 3,500 residents, plus 100,000 cows and 100,000 chickens.  Several years after the incorporation, the growing interest in Southern California land prompted the city to reconsider its future. Increasing land prices raised property taxes for farmers, forcing many to sell out and move further inland where land values were more stable.

Since ranching in Dairy Valley was becoming increasingly inefficient, the residents voted to allow for regular residential development. In 1967, the city was renamed Cerritos, reflecting the land's Spanish heritage.   Cerritos began to grow rapidly, achieving a population of more than 15,000 by 1970. Concerned with the rate of growth, city officials developed and adopted a progressive master plan; the goal was to maintain a balanced quality of life even as Cerritos grew into a city of the future.  The progressive nature of the city has been pivotal in its growth. An aggressive retail plan led to the development of the very successful Cerritos Auto Square and the Los Cerritos Center mall. These two facilities generate millions in tax revenue each year, giving the city the resources necessary to provide the very best in community services.  Cerritos is also home to the country's first solar-heated City Hall. In the 1990s, Cerritos opened two more state-of-the-art facilities: the Cerritos Performing Arts Center and the Cerritos Sheriff's Station/Community Safety Center.

About Cerritos

Cerritos is made up of upper-middle-class residential neighborhoods, a large retail area, office/industrial complexes, beautiful parks, and smaller outdoor shopping centers. Dining, shopping, and entertainment venues are concentrated in the Los Cerritos Center/Cerritos Auto Square region, which straddles Interstate 605 between South Street and Artesia Boulevard.  The main commercial/industrial area is located at the north side of the city. Most of the office and warehouse space is unobtrusive, and partially concealed by trees.

The remainder of the city consists of residential neighborhoods, corner shopping areas, and parks. Most of the housing was built between 1965 and 1989, but most neighborhoods are well maintained. It has been a trend in this region over the past several years to add-on, rebuild, or otherwise modernize older homes. As a result, many properties have unique custom touches and modern amenities.  Cerritos is home to a relatively large population of upscale Asian immigrants, primarily Koreans, Filipinos, and Chinese. The broader south Los Angeles County area, including Cerritos, is known for being one of the most ethnically diverse regions of California.

Activities

Being a financially stable city, Cerritos offers a nice range of facilities and activities to its residents. The public parks and sports complexes are modern and well maintained, and cater to many types of athletes. Examples include the Cerritos Olympic Swim and Fitness Center, Cerritos Sports Complex, and Cerritos Skate Park. The sports complex features 26 acres of fields for soccer, baseball, and softball. The city also operates community gyms, a fitness center and the Iron-Wood nine-hole golf course.  There are many parks in Cerritos, but the best known is Heritage Park, Liberty Park and Cerritos Regional Park. Heritage Park has softball fields and lighted basketball courts, as well as the kid-friendly Heritage Park Play Island. The facilities at Liberty Park include racquetball, tennis, and volleyball courts, a jogging track, playgrounds and a lighted softball diamond. Cerritos Regional Park is a 56-acre facility featuring a fishing lake and outdoor swimming pool.

If shopping is your interest, Cerritos retailers will keep you busy for days. The Los Cerritos Center first opened in 1971, and several updates over the years have kept it as popular as ever. National merchants, plenty of dining options, and an 11-screen movie theatre attract shoppers from miles around. More restaurants and shops are located on the streets and blocks surrounding the mal.  Cerritos has a second large, modern retail area near State Route 91 at Bloomfield. Called the Cerritos Towne Center, this complex is home to a large movie theatre, specialty stores, department stores, mass retailers, restaurants, and fast food.  The city's largest entertainment venue is the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, known as the CCPA. The CCPA attracts big-name entertainers of all genres, including country, pop, and classical dance. Each year, between August and May, the facility hosts over 150 performances. A separate conference room is also available for parties and other special events.  Cerritos' central location between Los Angeles and Orange County makes for convenient access to many of Southern California's famous attractions. Disneyland is about 10 miles southeast, Seal Beach is about 12 miles south, and the heart of Los Angeles is 20 miles northwest.

Schools

Public education in Cerritos is provided by the ABC Unified School District. ABC was formed in 1965 with the combination of Artesia, Bloomfield, and Carmenita school districts. The district has a total of 30 campuses, 17 of which are located in Cerritos; the remainder serves the communities of Artesia, Hawaiian Gardens and parts of Lakewood, Long Beach, and Norwalk. District-wide enrollment is more than 22,000, and the student-to-teacher ratio is 22.3. The main Cerritos high schools are Cerritos High and Gahr High.  Cerritos also has its own community college, known as Cerritos College. The campus has a full-time enrollment of about 12,000. Other nearby options for higher education are Cypress College, Biola University, Long Beach City College, and California State University, Long Beach.
