Real Estate & Homes in Cerritos - Cerritos Information Cerritos Cerritos History Since ranching in Dairy Valley was becoming increasingly inefficient, the residents voted to allow for regular residential development. In 1967, the city was renamed Cerritos, reflecting the land's Spanish heritage. Cerritos began to grow rapidly, achieving a population of more than 15,000 by 1970. Concerned with the rate of growth, city officials developed and adopted a progressive master plan; the goal was to maintain a balanced quality of life even as Cerritos grew into a city of the future. The progressive nature of the city has been pivotal in its growth. An aggressive retail plan led to the development of the very successful Cerritos Auto Square and the Los Cerritos Center mall. These two facilities generate millions in tax revenue each year, giving the city the resources necessary to provide the very best in community services. Cerritos is also home to the country's first solar-heated City Hall. In the 1990s, Cerritos opened two more state-of-the-art facilities: the Cerritos Performing Arts Center and the Cerritos Sheriff's Station/Community Safety Center. About Cerritos The remainder of the city consists of residential neighborhoods, corner shopping areas, and parks. Most of the housing was built between 1965 and 1989, but most neighborhoods are well maintained. It has been a trend in this region over the past several years to add-on, rebuild, or otherwise modernize older homes. As a result, many properties have unique custom touches and modern amenities. Cerritos is home to a relatively large population of upscale Asian immigrants, primarily Koreans, Filipinos, and Chinese. The broader south Los Angeles County area, including Cerritos, is known for being one of the most ethnically diverse regions of California. Activities If shopping is your interest, Cerritos retailers will keep you busy for days. The Los Cerritos Center first opened in 1971, and several updates over the years have kept it as popular as ever. National merchants, plenty of dining options, and an 11-screen movie theatre attract shoppers from miles around. More restaurants and shops are located on the streets and blocks surrounding the mal. Cerritos has a second large, modern retail area near State Route 91 at Bloomfield. Called the Cerritos Towne Center, this complex is home to a large movie theatre, specialty stores, department stores, mass retailers, restaurants, and fast food. The city's largest entertainment venue is the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, known as the CCPA. The CCPA attracts big-name entertainers of all genres, including country, pop, and classical dance. Each year, between August and May, the facility hosts over 150 performances. A separate conference room is also available for parties and other special events. Cerritos' central location between Los Angeles and Orange County makes for convenient access to many of Southern California's famous attractions. Disneyland is about 10 miles southeast, Seal Beach is about 12 miles south, and the heart of Los Angeles is 20 miles northwest.
