Pacifica BackgroundBetween 1906 and 1920, the Ocean Shore Railway ran a high-speed train between San Francisco and Santa Cruz. Small seaside communities developed along the rail line, including the beach towns of Edgemar, Linda Mar, Rockaway Beach and Sharp Park.In 1957, several of these communities joined together and incorporated as a city. A contest was held to name the new town, and Pacifica (Spanish for "peace") was selected. Today, Pacifica remains a peaceful alternative to its big-city neighbors. Although it's the largest city on the San Mateo County coast, Pacifica retains a small-town feel that makes it popular with locals and tourists alike.
