Real Estate & Homes in McKinleyville - California - McKinleyville, California homes and communities McKinleyvilleMcKinleyville BackgroundIn the 1860s, rancher Joe Dow established the small community of Dows Prairie on the banks of the Mad River. In 1897, the growing town was renamed Minorsville, although some settlers called it McKinleyville, in honor of the president. The community went by both names until 1901, when President McKinley was assassinated. The townsfolk agreed that the city should indeed be called McKinleyville, and the moniker has stuck to this day.McKinleyville is located in redwood country, and the town's Humboldt Tree Nursery helps to keep the region green. Fourteen million tree seedlings are grown annually to replant the national forests of California and Southern Oregon. Visit the nursery and take a tour to see the lifting, sorting and packing process in action. For more information on McKinleyville, visit coastparadise.com.
