Fort Bragg BackgroundFort Bragg is often confused with the North Carolina Marine base that bears the same name, but this California city has a history all its own. In 1857, a military base was established on land formerly inhabited by the Pomo Indians. The outpost was named after Captain Braxton Bragg, who later became a Confederate general. Its purpose was to maintain order on the Mendocino Indian Reservation. Operations continued at Fort Bragg until 1864, when the post was disbanded. After the fort was abandoned, the reservation closed and the land was sold. Several lumber mills opened in the area, and business thrived due to the region's abundant redwood forests. Much of the lumber that helped to rebuild San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake came from Fort Bragg. Today, fishing, lumber and tourism are the primary industries of the small coastal community.
