Real Estate & Homes in Eureka - California - Eureka, California homes and communities Eureka
Eureka BackgroundEureka was founded in 1850 by miners who struck gold in the '49 Gold Rush. Ships soon arrived in Humboldt Bay, supplying the mining crews that worked inland at the Trinity and Klamath rivers. In 1853, the Fort Humboldt military post was established to aid in conflict resolution between miners and the region's Native Americans. The fort, which was commanded by Ulysses S. Grant for several months, was abandoned in 1870. By this point, logging and fishing had joined mining as mainstays of the community. Eureka boasts the largest collection of Victorian architecture in California. Highlights include the four-story Carson Mansion and the rose-colored gingerbread home known as the Pink Lady.
