Real Estate & Homes in California - California homes and communities California
Welcome to the Golden State! California is the nation's most populated state, and the third largest in area. The discovery of gold in 1849 and the migration of thousands of "forty-niners" prompted California's admission into the Union in 1850. In the 20th century, the state was a haven to "Okies" and others seeking refuge during the Great Depression. It also became the heart of America's movie and television industry, much of which is centered in Hollywood. Today, the state's major industries are manufacturing, agriculture and technology. California is a land of contrasting beauty, from mountains and giant redwoods in the north to beaches and deserts in the south. Points of interest include Sutter's Mill, Disneyland, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, Sequoia National Park, Death Valley and Yosemite National Park. The state was named after a fictional earthly paradise in "Las Sergas de Esplanidian," written around 1500. Its capital is Sacramento, and major cities include Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose. More than 35 million residents live in California, which spans 155,959 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $211,500. Click on an area to learn more about it:
