Arkansas

Welcome to the Natural State!
The United States acquired Arkansas in 1803 through the Louisiana Purchase. Initially part of the Missouri Territory, the region became a state in 1836. Arkansas joined the Confederacy in 1861, but the northern part of the state was occupied by Union troops. After the Civil War, it returned to the Union. Arkansas has the nation's only active diamond mine at Crater of Diamonds State Park. Other attractions include Hot Springs National Park, Blanchard Springs Caverns, President Clinton's birthplace in Hope and the Wal-Mart Visitors' Center in Bentonville. The state's name comes from the Quapaw Indians. Its capital is Little Rock, and major cities include Fort Smith, Fayetteville, North Little Rock and Jonesboro. More than 2.7 million residents live in Arkansas, which spans 52,068 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $72,800.
