Welcome to the Grand Canyon State!
Arizona has one of the nation's largest Native American populations. More than 14 tribes are represented on 20 reservations. The state also has a long Old West history. Most of the territory became part of the United States after the Mexican War in 1848. In ensuing years, tribal chiefs such as Geronimo and Cochise battled to keep their land. Billy the Kid gunned down his first victim at Fort Grant. And Tombstone was the site of the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
Today, Arizona is known for its rich natural beauty in places such as the Grand Canyon, the Petrified Forest, the Painted Desert, Sedona and Flagstaff. Other attractions include Hoover Dam and Lake Mead on the Nevada border, Lake Powell on the Utah border, and the reconstructed London Bridge at Lake Havasu City. The state's name comes from an Indian word, “Arizonac,” which means “little spring." Its capital is Phoenix, and major cities include Tucson, Mesa, Glendale, Scottsdale, Chandler and Tempe. More than 5.5 million residents live in Arizona, which spans 113,635 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $121,300.
