Welcome to the Last Frontier!
Alaska is the nation's largest state. There are more than 100 state parks in this natural wonderland, which is one-fifth the size of the continental United States. About 15 percent of Alaska residents are Alaska Natives, which include Eskimos, American Indians and Aleuts. The state was largely unexplored until 1867, when Secretary of State William Seward bought the land from Russia for $7.2 million. At the time, the purchase was ridiculed as "Seward's Folly," but the ensuing discovery of gold and oil proves the buy was well worth the risk. The Prudhoe Bay reservoir, a huge oil and gas field on the Arctic Coast, was discovered in 1968. It is twice as large as any comparable field in North America and sends oil through the 800-mile-long Trans-Alaska pipeline to the port of Valdez.
Tourism is a major industry in Alaska, as are fishing, wood products and furs. Attractions include Denali National Park, Katmai National Park, Mendenhall Glacier, the North Tongass National Forest and Sitka National Historical Park. The state's name is a variation on an Aleut word that means "great land." Its capital is Juneau, and major cities include Anchorage and Fairbanks. Nearly 650,000 residents live in Alaska, which spans a whopping 571,951 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $144,200.
